Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

When mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson attempts to return a powerful Fae book she'd previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.  It seems the book contains secret knowledge--and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands.  And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side--leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam's life forfeit.  All in all, Mercy has had better day.  And if she isn't careful, she might not have many more to live...

New This Week:

  • A new layout!  I hope you all like this layout just as much as the last.  I like to change things up, so this one will be gone by Halloween.  I've already started working on a Halloween header. XD Proactive!  An admirable trait, methinks.
  • Out with the old, in with the new!  Since it is no longer summer, I took down my Summer Reading 2010 page and moved it to its own post.  I now have 2010-2011 Reading, which consists of the books I'll be reading this coming school year.  This will last between August 25th, 2010 to June 10th, 2011!  So, lots of book possibilities!  You can find a link to recommend a book by clicking on the "2010-2011 Reading" page. :)
  • School can kick rocks. >.< I have been so ridiculously tired.  I completely forgot about IMM until I saw people starting to post up their own IMM posts.  I look completely zonked on my video. XD
Coming in September:
  • A contest!  Woot, woot!  Available to win:
    • Other by Karen Kincy

    • 13 to Life by Shannon Delany

Teaser Tuesday (6)

Hey, ya'll.  Help a sistah out and tell me who created this meme, if you can! ^_^  Much appreciated.

So I'm currently only reading one book at the moment.  But I bought MOCKINGJAY today!  *squee fest*  I got fifty percent off with the coupon I got as a Borders Rewards member.  Oorah!  I also bought "Princess of the Midnight Ball" by Jessica Day George.  So I was so happy to get my Borders fix! :D

The Dark Divine
by Bree Despain
-excerpted from hardcover page 108-

I felt a bit dizzy as I inspected the at least ten-foot drop down to the other side.  Crap, that's high.  I was wondering how I was ever going to get down when I lost my balance and stumbled off the pillar.  Before I could shriek, something hard and tight wrapped around my arm, wrenching me to a stop a couple of feet from the ground.

* * *

School starts tomorrow for all us unfortunates here in the Charlotte, NC, public school system.  I plan on flaunting my knee-high rainbow socks for tomorrow.  (As well as this awesome makeup I picked up at Sephora today.)
Hurry up and vote!  Only a few hours left!
What can you tease us with?

My Weekly Finds (4)

(My weekly finds is a meme created by yours truly.  You can learn more about visiting the "My Weekly Finds" page.)

So I've got a pretty decent list this week.  Just a little note: I went to the library today! *gasp* I know!  I totally went against the very purpose of the library ban!  But hey, I had books to return and since I was there, I went ahead and grabbed the books I had reserved.  Alright, so I took a jaunt into the YA section and grabbed a book but whatever! XD  Point is, I am guilty as charged.

So now I have some books to show off for tomorrow's IMM! Yay! ^_^

Onto the list...

Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs

When her former boss and mentor is arrested for murder and left to rot behind bars by his own kind, it's up to shapeshifting car mechanic Mercy Thompson to clear his name, whether he wants her to or not. And she'll have to choose between the two werewolves in her life--whether she wants to or not.

The Holy Grail of Book Lists

*cough* Point is: I need to put this book list SOMEWHERE on my blog. I like to keep things neat and tidy to some extent and putting all these books under "Inventory" with my list of reviews is not going to cut it. I want to make room for bigger and better things! Well...room for more relevant things, I should say.

So this is the Golly G Minor, Batman! holy grail of book lists.

Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor

The Myth: Alice was an ordinary girl who stepped through the looking glass and entered a fairy tale world invented by Lewis Carroll in his famous storybook.

The Truth: Wonderland is real.  Alyss Heart is the heir to the throne, until her murderous aunt Redd steals the crown and kills Alyss' parents.  To escape Redd, Alyss and her bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, must flee to our world through the Pool of Tears.

But in the pool Alyss and Hatter are separated.  Lost and alone in Victorian London, Alyss is befriended by an aspiring author to whom she tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life.  Yet he gets the story all wrong.

Hatter Madigan knows the truth only too well, and he is searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland so she may battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

    Waiting on Wednesday (3)

    Title: Ascendant
    Author: Diana Peterfreund
    Series: Killer Unicorns
    Previous books: "Rampant"

I remember picking up "Rampant" at the library (or via the library website) and thinking, "Killer unicorns.  Now THERE'S a fresh idea."  But of course, I worried about the writing and the characters.  Great ideas can be butchered by horrible characters and/or writing.  But I LOVED "Rampant" and read it within a day or two.  Such an exciting story!  And I COVET long books, as some of you already know.

So I was pretty psyched when I found out there was a sequel.  AND IT COMES OUT NEXT MONTH!!  *major squeeage*  I have yet to obtain my own copy of "Rampant" but I must do so soon.  I won't be able to buy them together because "Torment" by Lauren Kate comes out the same day as "Ascendant" and I'm aiming to buy both.  I can't buy three hardcovers all in one swoop.  I'm not made of money.  So I'm thinking about getting "Rampant" from BookDepository.com.

"Ascendant" releases on the 28th of September.  Mark your calendars!!  (I've already had mine marked for months. :"> )

    What are you waiting for?

    Teaser Tuesday (5)

(I have no idea where "Teaser Tuesday" comes from!  If anyone can provide me with that info, please do via comment.  'Preciate it.)

So my major book-related issue right now (an issue that has NOTHING to do with school-related books, I promise) is that I HATE it when I spend all this time getting into a book only...not to finish it.  It annoys me to NO end!  And I find myself with this problem.  I'm SUPPOSED to be currently reading "Prophecy of the Sisters" and "The Looking Glass Wars".  Perhaps fatigue is just getting to me?  Well, there is no such thing as fatigue when it comes to books--supposedly.

"Prophecy of the Sisters" by Michelle Zink is magnificently written on so many levels--many levels that lack in "The Looking Glass Wars".  But "The Looking Glass Wars" is a fascinating idea!  I just wish it was written a bit better.

I might have reviews up of these this month if I have the inkling to continue reading them.  "Prophecy of the Sisters" I will definitely pick up again if I don't finish reading it this time around.  I guess my internal screening system is malfunctioning or something.

But that's not what you're here for!  You're here for a teaser!  And a teaser you shall have!

So I'm not one to go by the rules--in a good way!  (That's just the rebel in me talkin'.)  So here's a teaser of considerable length.  (Of course, I admit that the longer it is, the less of a teaser it is.  But that's okay.)

    Title: Iron Kissed
    Author: Patricia Briggs
Series: Mercy Thompson - Book 3
Previous books: "Moon Called," "Blood Bound"

The sea creature grew very still--and the waves of the ocean subsided like a cat gathering itself to pounce.  The wisps of clouds in the sky darkened.

"And how," he said very quietly, "would she break our glamour?"

"I brought her to help us discover a murderer because she has a very good nose," Zee said.  "If glamour has a weakness, it is scent.  Once she broke that part of the illusion, the rest followed.  She is not powerful or a threat."

The ocean struck without warning.  A giant wave slapped me, robbing me of my footing and my sight.  In one bare instant it stole the heat of my body so I don't think I could have breathed even if my nose wasn't buried in water.  ("Iron Kissed," mass market paperback edition, page 28)

I love the Mercy Thompson books.  And for the more mentally chaste people out there like me, lemme just say that while the cover suggests a racy book, it really isn't!  Very little swearing, no in depth sex scenes or anything like that.

Ash @ Smash Attack Reads! just did a review of "Moon Called," which is the first book in the series.  (And an AWESOME review, I must say.  Those quotes are bloody brilliant.)  Read it here!  (click it, click it, click it!  You know you want to!)

Since I already know I'll be finishing this book and since a review will therefore be put up, if you have any questions about the book you'd like me to answer in my review, please leave a comment with your question.  Because I like seeing some things answered in reviews and most times, can't really find those answers.

    What're you currently reading?

    In My Mailbox (8)

So I've had a pretty slow week this week.  Only FOUR BOOKS!  Incredible right?  Well, I've banned myself from the library until I've read all the unread books already on my bookshelf.  I have seven books out from the library right now and hopefully, I can read PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS and THE LOOKING GLASS WARS before school starts--or at least before the end of the month.

Sorry for no video or graphic this week.  I filmed a video but the audio isn't synced with the picture. >.> But you can see my cat!  If you still want to see it, view it here.

So, slow week.  (All links go to Goodreads)

I was pretty sneaky this week.  The two Ranger's Apprentice books were compliments of my mother.  She's training to be a massage therapist and needs to practice on people.  So I agreed to let her give me a full body massage if she buys me two books from Borders. XD Sneaky, yes!?  And a few of you may be going, "Whoa, I'd take that massage for free!" Well, so would I, if I were normal.  I don't like laying down on a table for over an hour, practically naked while my skin gets slathered in oil. >.> Nope.  I'll need some motivation. XD

Reviews to Come: The Looking Glass Wars - Frank Beddor; Prophecy of the Sisters - Michelle Zink

    My Weekly Finds (3)

Here are the books I found this week.  Not a lot (I've been reading the books I was supposed to read this summer--and haven't.  So I've been reading like crazy so I can complete the assignments that go with it BEFORE school starts.  Grr!) significantly less than the past two weeks.

--this is a meme I created so bloggers can display the books they've added to their to-read list in the past week; an info page is under construction--

    (all links go to Goodreads)

That's it!  I know, it's crazy how short it is!  (I know what you're thinking..."Amelia must be sick--dying!"  I'm not.  Just busy. XD)

I was totally psyched to discover that there was a sequel to "Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side" by Beth Fantaskey.  I loved that book, so there's a sequel!  Woot, woot!  I can't wait to read "Wintercraft".  It looks like my kind of book.

Did you find any interesting books this week?

Hello everybody!  Hope you all have had a wonderful week!  Leave a comment if you're stopping by from the FF, as well as a link to your own blog, even if you DON'T have a FF post. :)

    Latest reviews:

    Contest Update:
Right now, it's Shiver (Maggie Stiefvater) and 13 to Life (Shannon Delany) tied for first.  Shows how much people love their wolves.  [But apparently, no one is interested in or has never heard of "Cast In Shadow" by Michelle Sagara West.  Which is interesting.  It was a pretty decent book and still in perfect condition.]  Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen is in it for second place, followed with Other by Karen Kincy for third.  If you haven't already voted, please do so now before you forget.  You may vote for as many books as you like.

Just a reminder about the books that I own that I'm giving away: They are all in perfect condition.  The only scuffs are from shelf wear.  They are all in salable condition, as in, they are no worse than what you'd find available at the bookstore.  The books I own that I'll be giving away are: OTHER by Karen Kincy, NOMANSLAND by Lesley Hauge, CAST IN SHADOW by Michelle Sagara West, and REBEL ANGELS by Libba Bray.

You have until the 25th to vote.  The contest will start early September.

    Upcoming Reviews:
Within the month, I should have the reviews for the following books:
    • The Looking Glass Wars - Frank Beddor
    • Prophecy of the Sisters - Michelle Zink
I dare not commit myself to more than that, at least for this month alone.  I have school coming up and two books to read for AP English III along with summer assignments that I haven't started yet.  So yeah.  Irresponsible much, Amelia?

I hope you all have a great week!  Happy reading!

    Eon by Alison Goodman

Eon has been studying the ancient art of Dragon Magic for four years, hoping he'll be able to apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good fortune. But he also has a dark secret. It is forbidden for females to practice the Dragon Magic and if discovered, Eon faces a terrible death.

    Waiting on Wednesday (2)

I loved "13 to Life" and so I'm understandably pretty psyched about the sequel "Secrets and Shadows" set to release February 15th 2011.

That's an awesome cover isn't it?  That describes the kind of book you can read under the covers with a flashlight.  It's a drastic change from the soft blue of the cover of "13 to Life".

Oh, and that's another thing.  I never understand the relevancy of the title.  "13 to Life"?  Can someone please explain that for me?  I mean, Shannon Delany seems to go for the more abstract titles apparently...

    What are YOU waiting for?

Just a little side note/something of interest:  Kimberly Pauley commented on my review of Sucks to be Me and of course, I found myself going back and reading my entire review, checking to see if I'd written anything infinitely embarrassing or offensive. XD Do authors realize their power over people?   I was flipping out like this! *cough* Carry on, people.

Sucks to be Me by Kimberly Pauley

Mina Hamilton's parents want her dead. (Or undead to be precise.) They're vampires, and like it or not, Mina must decide whether to become a vampire herself. But Mina' more interested in hanging out with best friend Serena and trying to catch the eye of the too-hot-for-high-school Nathan Able than in the vampire training classes she's being forced to take. How's a girl supposed to find the perfect prom date and pass third-year French when her mom and dad are breathing down her neck--literally?

    Follow Friday (3) + a little more

Howdy, everybody! (I know, I don't make a good first impression.  Who the heck says "howdy" anymore?)  If you're here from the Follow Friday, I ask that you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave a link to your FF post, if you have one.  I love returning the favor when people comment.  :)

So there's my little Follow Friday quota--yay!

For both OLD and NEW followers: If you will notice, there is a poll on my right sidebar.  The question?  Which of these books would you like to see in a giveaway/contest/trade?  I'd like to give you a bit of information about the books that you would receive when I hold this contest.  So you're not going in blind, ya?

All of the books will be paperback except for "Nomansland" by Lesley Hauge.  I am not made of money and the money I DO have right now is being saved for school clothes and supplies.  Once school has started, however, whatever money is left will go towards this contest.  For this reason, I chose books that were already out in paperback but were relatively popular.  (Paperback books at Borders are under $10.)

The finer details of this upcoming contest will be announced later in the month (after the 25th, which is the first day of school for me).  I have (edit:) four books already that I own that I will DEFINITELY be giving away.  All are in perfect condition.  (If you haven't already read my "About Me" page, you should know that I am completely OCD about my books.  The only abnormalities on the books are due to shelf wear.  In other words, all my books are in salable condition, to use Borders' terms. XD)  So the books that will DEFINITELY be given away are: Rebel Angels by Libba Bray (paperback), Nomansland by Lesley Hauge (hardcover), Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara West (paperback), [added edit] Other by Karen Kincy.

I will pick two of the highest chosen books from the poll (so you betta vote) and then have a giveaway with those two, separate from the four I will definitely give away.

Alright, so that wasn't "a little more" but whatever. XD

Hope ya'll have a good week!

Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex by Eoin Colfer

Artemis has committed his entire fortune to a project he believes will save the planet and its inhabitants, both human and fairy. Can it be true? Has goodness taken hold of the world's greatest teenage criminal mastermind?

Captain Holly Short is unconvinced, and discovers that Artemis is suffering from Atlantis Complex, a psychosis common among guilt-ridden fairies--not humans--and most likely triggered by Artemis's dabbling with fairy magic. Symptoms include obsessive-compulsive behavior, paranoia, multiple personality disorder and, in extreme cases, embarrassing professions of love to a certain feisty LEPrecon fairy.

Unfortunately, Atlantis Complex has struck at the worst possible time. A deadly foe from Holly's past is intent on destroying the actual city of Atlantis. Can Artemis escape the confines of his mind--and the grips of a giant squid--in time to save the underwater metropolis and its fairy inhabitants?

    03 August 2010

    Teaser Tuesday (4)

I'm reading a few books at the moment (I always read a bunch of books until one captures my interest and I devote my time finishing it).  But for the sake of time and patience, I will only tease you about two of the books I'm reading.

Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex (Artemis Fowl #7) -- Eoin Colfer
Captain Short went down faster than she would have liked, which was totally due to equipment malfunction.  If the reel at her belt had not been damaged during the recent amorphobot attack, then it would have automatically slowed her descent, and Holly could have avoided the impact that was surely to come.  As it was, she was more or less falling at full g with nothing to lessen her impact other than a slight tension from the piton line.  (hardcover, page 142) [link to Goodreads here]

Claire de Lune -- Christine Johnson
Lisbeth was usually so Zen about things, meditating on problems and coming up with what she liked to call "gentle solutions."  Claire opened her mouth, ready to apologize again, and stopped short.  The smell that filled her nostrils was unmistakable.  Underneath Lisbeth's anger, she smelled of fear. (hardcover, page 230) [link to Goodreads here]

When Abbey's best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey goes through the motions of mourning her best friend, but privately, she refuses to believe that Kristen is really gone. Then she meets Caspian, the gorgeous and mysterious boy who shows up out of nowhere at Kristen's funeral, and keeps reappearing in Abbey's life. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he's the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again...but also special.

Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her--one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.

    The Story Siren

Alright.  Week 6 of IMM and I have had a PITIFUL round up this past week.  Like, oh my flipping goodness.  A pittance compared to the huge haul I had last week.  XD

    I got....

So honestly, I don't think I'm going to be able to finish "Captivate".  I started reading it and I was two chapters in when I felt it sorely lacking.  Since a few of the books I got last week just didn't cut it--as in, I had to go against my 100 page rule before I threw it across the room--so I'm going to have a post later this week titled "The Reject Pile".  So stay tuned for that.

    Currently Reading...

Right now, I am in the middle of "The Hollow" by Jessica Verday and I LOVE it so far.  I can't wait to rant and rave about it in the review--which should be up in the next few days, as soon as I finish reading.

    Extra, Extra!
